The IRÁNY a Jövő Party addresses the three heads of state in an open letter over AI- and quantum-based cyberattacks
Signed by party leader Dezső Farkas, the IRÁNY Party has sent an open letter to Prime Minister Péter Magyar, to Ágnes Forsthoffer, Speaker of the National Assembly, and to President of the Republic András Baka, Commander-in-Chief of the Hungarian Defence Forces. The letter calls, with a deadline, for a ten-point package of measures to prepare against cyberattacks based on artificial intelligence and quantum technology.
The letter was prompted by the fact that on 27 August 2026, OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and more than a hundred other companies warned in a joint open letter that AI-based cyberattacks will scale up by an order of magnitude within months, and that there is only limited time to strengthen defences. The warning names hospitals and waterworks specifically, and asks governments to coordinate defence and to put more resources into critical infrastructure.
In Hungary, during the very same period, the Hungarian State Treasury was hit by a cyberattack. To this day no public, itemised technical report has been produced on the 2 August incident, while according to press reports the pension, family-support and agricultural-subsidy databases may also have been affected. The State Audit Office already flagged the data-protection risks of the Treasury’s IT network back in 2019.
“It is not technological lag that will knock us out, but the fact that in this country there is no consequence when a critical state system goes down,” the letter states. “There is no investigation whose results are made public, and there is no responsible person who could be named.”
The letter is emphatically not framed as a party-political matter. For more than a year, from the party’s announcement video onwards, Dezső Farkas has argued that artificial intelligence and quantum technology are a strategic sector. Over the past year one government has succeeded another, yet no substantive step has been taken on either side.
The letter’s key demands:
- Within 30 days: an itemised, public briefing on the attack against the Treasury; the appointment of a national cyber-defence officer; a parliamentary committee hearing.
- Within 60 days: a mandatory, AI-assisted attack test of critical state, healthcare, energy, financial, transport and water-supply systems; public detection and response time targets; regulation of the security requirements for AI-generated code in public procurement.
- Within 90 days: a national AI and quantum cyber-defence programme with a dedicated budget line; a framework agreement with leading AI and quantum developers so that, in the event of an incident, Hungary’s defending organisations can access the most advanced responder models; a post-quantum cryptography transition roadmap; a parliamentary resolution declaring AI and quantum technology a strategic sector.
The party has offered whatever professional help it can provide.
